I was shaking like a leaf.<\/p>\n<p>My internal prayer: Please let the professor be open-minded. Please let the students be understanding. Please let the syllabus be reasonable.\u00a0 Please let the building be intuitive. Please let us have the right supplies for tonight. Please let us thaw before we meet anyone. The list was endless.<\/p>\n<p>I caught the professor headed to the supply closet and explained ever so briefly that I was there with Soleil, and she was not accompanying me.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t bring your daughter to school day and you missed a memo, Professor.\u00a0 I asked if I could sit in the first two classes, and, perhaps still in shock, she acquiesced.<\/p>\n<p>She introduced herself and asked the class to do the same including a brief history of experience drawing.\u00a0 \u201cMy name is Mary and I\u2019m a Junior.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t taken an art class before. \u201c\u00a0 \u201cMy name is Karen and I drew in middle school,\u201d etc. Soleil was second to last. \u201cHi, my name is Soleil, and yeah, I\u2019m eleven,\u201d she said with heartbreaking poise and charm and a shrug.\u00a0 \u201cI uhm, drew in middle school, too, \u2018cause I\u2019m in middle school now.\u201d If she\u2019d thrown in a wink, I\u2019d have been worried, but she was genuinely connecting with the other students.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve been drawing pretty seriously for three years, concentrating on Manga.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that was it.\u00a0 Just like that, she had introduced herself to her college peers. No bumps, no bruises, and no bad vibes. She\u2019s just another student in a challenging art course, determined to draw better.
